Acappella U - Ep. 53 - 11/18/09

Now that he's gotten the global economy back on track, Joey hath returned, so stop worrying your pretty little heads about weather he was doing hard labor in a gulag, was dead, etc. . It's the most wonderful time of the year, with the fall semester in full swing on college campuses everywhere, including Acappella U. In fact, we have a big announcement - the first scholarly work in the history of the University. More of a discovery really. We also 'discover' Mouth Off, a REAL a cappella podcast. Join us for some Capri Suns, spiral notebook party invites and a cappella tunes. 'Don't Stop Believing' - Journey / USC SoCal VoCals 'Chicago' - Sufjan Stevens / NYU APC Rythym 'The Luckiest' - Ben Folds / USC Reverse Osmosis 'Bad is Bad' - Huey Lewis / Tufts Amalgamates 'Day Dripper' - The Beatles / Tufts Amalgamates

Acappella U (Part-Time) - Ep. 49 - 5/2/08

This is about as normal an Episode of Acappella U as you're likely to find - great music, listener mail, inane commentary, everything that makes the show great and turned Joey into a celebrity (yeah right), and not a drop more.  Next week we'll be hanging out in NYC for Episode 5-oh and the ICCA Finals, but for now much on some Rambler Bits dipped in Cream of Testimony.

"Take On Me" (Ah-Ha / SOU Dulcet)*
"Brighter Than Sunshine" (Aqualung / U of R Midnight Ramblers)*

Acappella U (Part-Time) - Ep. 47 - 3/28/08

Wow. So this took a while, but FINALLY our On The Rocks premiere episode is finished! See, originally this was supposed to be OTR AND Divisi, but then the Divisi stuff wasn't finished yet and. . . well, you get the picture.  The point is, Pete Hollens et. al. have put together a great CD. We plug in some Appalachian State a cappella to fill the gaping hole left by Divisi (is 'gaping hole' politically correct??) and talk about our new show, Acappella U HD.

Acappella U (Part-Time) - Ep. 46 - 2/25/08

The votes are in and, well, you won't be rid of me so easily. Mwahahahaha! It turns out that many of you enjoy, and dare I say look forward to my episodily commentaries. But as usual, I am willing to bow to your wishes and give everybody everything they want. . . . sort of. Midwestern a cappella occupies the first two slots this week, again this is due to student whining suggestions. Oh, and FSU's All Night Yahtzee returns to the U, replete with ICCA Quarterfinals victory garb. Huzzah!

"Mama's Room" (Under the Influence of Giants / Wash U After Dark)
"Life Is A HIghway" (Rascal Flatts / Wisconsin Madison)
"Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk" (Rufus Waintright / All-Night Yahtzee)
"Such Great Heights" (the Postal Service / All-Night Yahtzee)
"Sun On Moon" (James Taylor / NYU NHarmonics)

Acappella U (Part-Time) - Ep. 45 - 1/30/08

By (apparently) popular demand, we're trying out a new condensed (read: no talking) show format. The last few reviews on iTunes have been un-erringly critical of my yip-yapping, so we'll see how this goes over - after all, the audience is always right. Tell us what you think, and maybe shoot us a nice review over on iTunes - we need the love!

Blurry (Puddle of Mudd / Chordials)
Ghost (Indigo Girls / Yale Mixed Company)
Walk the Walk (Poe / Virginia Sil'hooettes)
God Is A DJ (Pink / Sil'hooettes)

We know, it's actually been less than a month, buy if our new, er, supporters have their way we'll be delivering the goods a lot more often. Auditorily scope the new Oregon hotness, aka OSU Outspoken. Mix in some Cornell and you've got a hell of an a cappella cocktail, just remember to Sing Responsibly. OK that was lame, but it's like, 14 degrees out, and our brains are frozen.

"Jesus Walks" (Kanye West / OSU Outspoken)
"Photograph" (Nickelback / Cornell Chordials)
"Free Fallin'" (Tom Petty / Smith Smithereens)
"Eli the Barrow Boy" (The Decemberists / UMBC Mama's Boys)

'Back to school, back to school, to prove to dad that I'm not a fool.' Ah, the end of summer begets a new school year bedecked with $140 backpacks, a cornucopia of halter tops, and 'great for dorm room' crap from Target. And who better to put teh dopest a cappella licks to your otherwise run-of-the-mill BTS experience than Acappella U?? That's what I thought. Oh, and please watch Flight of the Conhords as soon as humanly possible. 'Sexyback' (Justin Timberlake / Back Row) 'God Only Knows' (Beach Boys / Brown Derbies) 'Either Way' (Guster / L'Shir) 'Life' (Fleet Street Singers) 'My Love (Justin Timberlake / UNC Clefhangers)

Acappella U (Part-Time) - Ep. 39 - 5/30/2007

In true collegiate fashion, we're cramming to get that thesis done by the deadline. We haven't come up with a topic yet, and it's due Friday, but we're sure something will come to us if we just watch a little bit more of the History Channel. This go-round we bring you some quality, mid-major a cappella, music that DOSEN'T make you wonder if it is, indeed, actually made entirely by singers. This is the bread and butter of collegiate a cappella, the backbone if you will, the sort of salt-of-the-earth, middle-class a cappella that this university was built on. Well, not really, but that sounded good, right? Right On (Hartford College L'Shir) St. Theresa (Wisconsin Redefined) Taken Up (St. Olaf Limestones) Walk Away (Hartford College Vocal Explosion) Someone to Fall Back On (USC Reverse Osmosis) The Seed (3.) Hola, amigos!! What's that? You don't habla espanol? No problemo! I will translate. . . no, no, it's not cultural appreciation day here at Acappella University, nor is it Spanish 201. It's just my hangover from a week spent south of the border, down Mexico way. Hey - I bet I could write a song about that. I hope ya'll liked Matt Bolling as a substitute prof, 'cause you're going to get another healthy dose of him for EP. 38. Matt, a Va Tech alumni, will be playing some tracks next time from For Today We Are All Hokies: An A Cappella Tribute, which is a double CD fundraiser that's available on acatunes. For now though, we're up to our usual shenanegains (sp?), including a MONEY interview with some dude from the HOTTEST group at UMass, the Dynamics. The Playa list. . . We've gotten the message you've been sending us about playing better music, and we're responding with deadly force. We even brought in Russel Crowe to help. So, to make a long story short, we had a blast at the Boston University Night of A Cappella - not just because we got to see a benefit concert featuring NINE groups, but because we realized that Boston is only 38 seconds away from Rochester. Oh, and we also got to see the longest beer pong table in New England. Check out some freshness from BU, for your a cappella edification. "Everything You Want" (Vertical Horizon / BU Treblemakers) "Ahava Bli Sikui" (Sarit Hadad / BU Kol Echad) "Head Over Feet" (Alanis Moirisette / BU Terpsichore) "Baba O'Riley" (The Who / BU Dear Abbeys) "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" (Elton John / BU Dear Abbeys)

Acappella U - Music Videocast Ep. 2 - The Tufts Amalgamates Here's the first of two videocasts you'll be seeing from our trip to Ithaca College. We decided to do do music videos this month instead of one plus a masterclass because this concert had two groups at it. This first one features Ithacappella's guest group, the Tufts Amalgamates. The video featuring Ithacappella should be up by the 30th or so. Enjoy!

Acappella U (Part-Time) - Ep. 25 - 10/10/2006

What a weekend - Ithaca NY is one kuh-razy place, and the Acappella U team wound up passed out in a strange basement with strangers all around us, but we still managed to make it home in time to get this filthily good episode up on the internet-waves (that's actual physiks). We had a blast meeting the Amalgamates and Ithacappella, taping the concert, and throwing people out of the party house when she could house no more. All in all we learned three things - 1) That guy with the eyebrow ring is pretty sweet (at singing). So's the black guy. And the really skinny guy.* 2) Joey is a very streaky beer pong player 3) Rymachine needs to learn to keep his hands off the talent Oh, and 'Zombie' from Baggage Claim will be on BOCA 2007 - we're calling it. Here's the rep-uh-toire 'Island In the Sun' (Weezer/MIT Logs) 'Zombie' (Cranberries/Tufts Amalgamates) 'Pain' (Jimmy Eat World/Tufts Amalgamates) 'I Believe' (Unk./Ithacappella) 'Hard to Handle' (The Black Crowes/Ithacapella) *This statement applies not only to Ithacappella, but to most (>85%) of all collegiate a cappella groups. Feel free to use it as your own in order to sound smart.

Acappella U - Ep. 20 - 08/09/2006

The fall semster is approaching fast for the University and its time to pick some electives! In this episode students will attend Classical A Cappella 101, Barbershop 111, and still have time for some contempory songs between classes. In addition, the show again features some creative elements (which no one has seemed to notice) as it did in Episode 19 (hint - check out the Creep Intro from that show) So, if you know what I'm talking about and want to prove me wrong or you just want to submit a comment, write an email to acappellau@mac.com or voice your opinion on the Student Body Call In Line (949) 273-0923. Acappella U - Ep. 17 - 06/15/2006 This show is more well-done than usual, 'cause I left it in the oven an extra week! *audience laughter* We kick this one off with the first request from our new student request/comment call-in line (949-273-0923). We also have BYU Vocal Point, the '06 ICCA champs, on the podcast. Acappella U - Ep. 16 - 05/24/2006 First of all, thanks to everyone for all the positive feedback on the videocast! Its certainly something you're going to see more of in the future, but we're going to start a separate feed for them. And congrats to our two new faculty members. This one's a little late, but its crazy delicious. We bookend the show with a couple of bubs classics, and in between we talk to PennYo, get cozy with South Africa, and generally run amok. I also spend some time in the www.acappellau.com forums and ask the student body to pass the hat for Chad Bergeron (host of The Acapodcast), may his iPod rest in peace. Enjoy the ripened, juicy and 100% organic fruits of our labor! Acappella U (Video) - Ep. 15 - 05/08/2006 Our first videocast!! We said we'd do it all the way back in episode one, and we HAVE delivered. Please email me, acappellau@mac.com , or better yet, post in the forums on our website www.acappellau.com, and tell me what you think!! Although we weren't able to record the actual competition as I had hoped, I think everyone will enjoy the show we put together. Thanks again to Paul Huffman and Cheryl Chiou for all the help (more on you two next episode), and to all the goups who came on the show as well as the entire team from Varsity Vocals. The show is not going to become a videocast only, this is just a special occasion because of the ICCAs. We will, however, have much more video in the future - I'm thinking of calling it the Acappella U Video Minute . . . . but more on that later. I will post an mp3 version of the show like I always do, but to answer this question before it even gets asked, the answer is no, I will not post the show in another video format, it's mpeg 4 or bust. Actually, we will have another video installment soon - there's a new romantic comedy making the festival rounds right now called Shut Up and Sing which is about a collegiate a cappella group's 'reunion' of sorts at a friend's wedding. We're going to have Bruce Leddy, the film's writer/director, come on the show ,talk about the movie and show us some clips, so be on the lookout for that in the coming weeks. A couple of technical notes: before starting, I would recommend going in to your iTunes preferances and, under 'Playback', select play videos in a separate window. Usually I can just click on the little album art window to make that happen, but for some reason I couln't with this video. If you're simply using quicktime, then it doesn't matter. Also, there are chapter markers in this episode, but they're only visible when you view the show in an expanded window as described above, or in Quicktime. If you're having technical issues, please just start a thread in the forums so others can see your issue and the resolution. Enjoy the show!!

Acappella U - Ep. 11 - 03/2/2006 Episode 11 - Two for one! First of all, sorry about the delayed posting. Libsyn upgraded their servers last week, so I was unable to upload the show until today. This episode is a double-header. I took the material I got from both the Rochester (Feb. 18th) and Cornell (Feb. 25th) ICCA shows and combined them into one extra-large helping of collegiate a cappella. The second show, as promised, features all Cornell music except for the 'Winners Circle.' Thanks to Hayley, the Midnight Ramblers, After 8, Sarah, Bryce, Steve, James C.C., The Diesel, Stevie J. and every one else who made these last couple of weeks possible. The chapter markers now go right to the beginning and end of songs, too, so you can use them a little more liberally. Here's what we've got: 'Save a Horse' (UV Hulabahoos / Big & Rich - Song of the Year in my opinion) Running Away (Stanford Harmonics / Hoobastank) 'Shut De Phone' (Rochester Midnight Ramblers) 'Nickelodeon Medley-Doug' (Rochester Midnight Ramblers) 'Gimme Some Lovin' (Rochester Midnight Ramblers / Steve Winwood) 'Bon Jovi Medley' (SU Orange Appeal / Bon Jovi) 'The Scientist' (Cornell Last Call / Coldplay) 'Echo' (Cornell Chordials / Incubus) 'Human Nature' (Cornell Hangovers / Jacko) 'Silence' (Cornell Class Notes / Sarah MacLachlan) 'Major Tom / Space Oddity' (Tufts Beelzebubs / David Bowie & Peter Schilling)

Acappella U - Ep. 10 - 02/13/2006 Episode 10 Extravaganza!!! African a cappella! Beautiful women in my studio!! Check out our store at www.cafepress.com/acappellau and buy our stuff!!! You asked for hoodies, you got 'em, plus a whole lot more! Seriously, though, this is the second episode I've placed on the main feed as an AAC file with enhancements (chapters, etc.), and the second time I've posted the mp3 version of the show on my downloads page, http://homepage.mac.com/joeycampagna/FileSharing1.html But seriously, you should just go to www.apple.com and download iTunes (for free) so you can convert the AAcs to MP3s yourself(ves). Seriously, we need more pictures for the website, I only got two since last time. I know the Loyal Listeners can do better. For Episode 10 we feed the beast with: "Kyrie" (Mister Mister / Oregon On the Rocks) "Zombie", "Fields of Gold" (Cranberries / Sting / Navi Redd) "Love You Madly", "Still In Love" (Cake / Rochester Vocal Point) "Lady In Red" (Chris DeBurgh / Dartmouth Chords) "Nintendo Medley" (A bunch of Japanese guys / Wisconsin Redefined) NOTE: Some of you may have downloaded this post very early monday morning with no music file attached and a strange 12-second clip instead. Just delete it and listen to this one www.uoontherocks.com www.naviredd.co.za www.sa.rochester.edu/vocalpt/ www.dartmouth.edu/~cords/ www.uwredefined.com

If your media player is not able to play this file type, please go to http://homepage.mac.com/joeycampagna/FileSharing1.html where you'll be able to download an mp3 version of the show. Acappella U - Ep. 6 - 11/23/05 Our first roadshow! This week, Acappella U come to you from the ICCA quarterfinals at Syracuse University, where the RPI Rusty Pipres and the SUNY Potsdam PointerCounts advanced to the semis in New York out of a field of six talented groups. This was a bit of a learning experience, particularly with the audio levels during interviews, so you may have to adjust your volume a bit. We'll be much better next time, though. Several of our Loyal Listeners found the booth and said hi, and we had a lot of new folks interested as well. I also got the chance to sit down and have a chat with Maxine Sharavsky, the ICCA NE region producer. "Stacy's Mom" by Fountains of Wayne / SU Orange Appeal; "Ga'agua" by Tufts Shir Appeal (two groups with Appeal in their name in a row -- wierd), "If I Am" by U of R After Hours, "Where Have You Been" by SUNY Potsdam Pointercounts
